Johnny Depp’s Lawyer Camille Vasquez Reveals Why She ‘Never Dated’ Him
Lawyer Camille Vasquez has revealed why she never dated Johnny Depp while representing the actor during his defamation trial against Amber Heard.
Vasquez, 40, told Extra during an interview published on Friday, November 1, that the 2022 rumors of a romance between the pair, which were confirmed by Us Weekly as false at the time, were baseless.
“I would never,” Vasquez told the outlet when quizzed over dating the Pirates of the Caribbean star. “Let me just go on the record here. Never dated Johnny Depp. Never would date Johnny Depp. I think he’s a lovely person… He’s not my type.”
Vasquez, who spent four years working on the case of Depp, 61, vs Heard, 38, added that after initially meeting Depp, she realized they were very different.
“I remember maybe after 30 [or] 40 minutes of speaking with him, I remember having an out of body experience and looking at him and thinking, ‘He views the world so differently than I do.’ Like, he definitely uses a different part of his brain, he’s such an artist,” Vasquez told the outlet.
Vasquez added that she has not “to this day” seen Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates franchise and was only familiar with him through his role in, “maybe Chocolat?”
After Us reported in May 2022 that rumors of a romance were untrue, People reported in June that year that Vasquez was “disappointed” to learn of speculation surrounding her relationship with Depp. “It’s also an unethical charge being made. It’s sexist,” she told the outlet. “It’s unfortunate and it’s disappointing, but at the same time it kind of comes with the territory. I can’t say I was all that surprised.”
Vasquez continued at the time, “I care very deeply about my clients, and we have obviously become close. But when I say we, I mean the entire team, and of course that includes Johnny. And, I’m Cuban and Colombian. I’m tactile. What do you want me to say? I hug everyone. And I’m not ashamed about that.”
During Depp’s defamation trial against Heard — which began on April 11, 2022 and concluded on May 27, 2022 — Vasquez made headlines for her no-nonsense line of questioning.
Heard identified herself as a victim of domestic violence in a 2018 Washington Post op-ed. Although Heard did not mention Depp by name in the piece, Depp (who was married to the actress for 15 months from 2015 to 2016) claimed that her allegations of violence damaged his career and reputation.
The jury awarded $10 million to Depp in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages. Heard, meanwhile, was awarded $2 million in compensatory damages in her counterclaim against Depp.
While Vasquez and Depp weren’t a romantic match, the actor allegedly shared a brief relationship with fellow lawyer Joelle Rich, as confirmed by Us in September 2022. Rich represented Depp in his U.K. libel lawsuit against The Sun at the time.
