In retro news, I’m lighting a 16-shaped cake for Call of Duty: World at War. In the First Person Shooter wing of my gaming museum, WaW stands out as a pivotal, er… CoD piece. Back in the day, I travelled to Treyarch to preview this and was highly impressed with its co-op campaign (2P split or 4 online), the inaugural version of Nazi Zombies, and the way military advisor Hank Keirsey’s eyes lit up when we spoke about flamethrower usage and the brave acts of Aussies in the Pacific theatre.
Technically the beginning of the Black Ops sub-story that has now reached Black Ops 6, WaW stands up quite well, mostly due to an all-in performance by Gary Oldman as Viktor Reznov.

Ring Fit Adventure is a marathon, not a sprint, just like adapting a healthy lifestyle should be. That said, after 18 hours or so I wanted to keep engaging with the fun and challenging blend of exercise and RPG mechanics it provided. 7.8/10, good.

Once again this borrows many of its ideas from the Gears of War series, but they’re good ideas, and SM2 does a fine job of making them its own. When you’re eviscerating aliens on planets as pretty as these, it’s hard not to leave satisfied. 8/10 Great.

A steal at this price. A stealth heavy Assassin’s Creed with an intimate playspace reminiscent of the first game. There’s a fresh, back-to-basics approach here that proves to be a successful first step in returning this franchise to former glory. 8/10.

Horizon Forbidden West – $109.95 / $79
Admittedly, I spent just as much time testing the Pro Enhancements of Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered as I did this. The targeted improvements are more or less identical across the two titles, though Forbidden West gets some extra sugar sprinkled on its unique gameplay sections, i.e., improved cloud rendering in the DLC area with a higher quality render mode. Beyond that, you can expect new upscaling and anti-aliasing algorithm for 60 fps gameplay at resolution mode quality. Improved volumetric sampling for sacreliciously good-looking godrays/volumetric lights and more overall stability. All in all, super impressive stuff.
